Connect a Facebook Messenger sender
By connecting Facebook Messenger to Yapper, your assistant can reply to direct messages sent to your Facebook Pages. This page explains how to connect your Facebook Pages as senders, what the assistant supports on Messenger, and how to manage the connection.
Requirements
Before you begin, ensure you have:
- A Facebook Page that you manage (you must have administrator permissions for the Page).
- A Facebook account with access to that Page.
Connecting Facebook Messenger
To connect your Facebook Page:
- In the Yapper dashboard, navigate to Admin → Connections.
- Click the Connect Messenger button.
- You will be redirected to Facebook. Log in to your Facebook account and select the Pages you want to connect to Yapper.
- Grant the requested permissions for Yapper to manage your Pages and messages.
- After authorizing, you will be redirected back to the Yapper dashboard.
Each connected Facebook Page is registered as a separate sender. In the Admin → Senders view, Messenger senders are grouped under a "Facebook Page {name}" section with the connection type listed as "Facebook Login".
If you connect exactly one Page and your account already has other playbooks, the dashboard will ask if you want to join an existing playbook or keep the new one. If you connect multiple Pages at once, each Page is automatically bound to its own separate playbook.
What the Assistant Does
Once connected, your assistant automatically handles incoming messages sent to your Facebook Page:
- Direct Messages: The assistant replies to DMs sent by customers.
- Message Edits: If a customer edits a message, the assistant updates its context and adjusts its replies accordingly.
- Reactions: Customer emoji reactions and removals are recorded in the conversation history.
- Read and Delivery Statuses: Yapper tracks when messages are delivered and read.
- Activity Sync: If a team member replies to a customer from another platform (like the native Facebook Page Inbox), Yapper records the reply in the conversation history.
Note: comments are not supported on Messenger. The assistant only replies to direct messages (DMs).
Messaging Window and Limits
- 24-Hour Window: Meta restricts automated replies to a standard 24-hour window from the customer's last message. Replies sent outside this window will fail.
- Page Limit: You can only connect Pages that fit within a single Facebook authorization page (approximately 25 Pages). If you manage more than this limit, you cannot complete the setup.
Message History Import
When you first connect or reconnect a Page, Yapper automatically imports recent conversation history.
- Shallow Import: Yapper fetches up to the 20 newest messages for each conversation.
- No Greeting Trigger: Importing history does not trigger automated greetings or playbook phases.
- Status Visibility: In Admin → Senders, you will see an "Importing DMs" status badge. If the import fails, it will show "DM import failed".
Disconnecting and Reconnecting
You can disconnect a sender or manage authorization directly from your Facebook settings or the Yapper dashboard. Yapper detects two main connection issues:
- Deauthorized: If you remove the Yapper application from your Facebook settings, the sender's status changes to deauthorized. The conversation history and sender configuration remain intact, but messaging is paused.
- Invalid Token: If Facebook invalidates your Page token (for example, due to a password change or app removal), the sender status changes to invalid token.
To resolve these connection issues and unblock the assistant, go to Admin → Connections and run the Connect Messenger flow again.
